whose hand, this fine piece?

sun-drenched color
textures subtle as etchings --
whose hand, this fine piece?

bright butterflies dance
atop gangly wildflowers,
wings gently breathing

some bright boy's mischief

an old crumpled Dodge
splashed blue, green, purple and orange --
some bright boy's mischief

deep in the Valles
far up Alamo Canyon --
what's this old car's tale?

this pastel tableau

corals, creams and greens
time painted in rocks and trees --
this pastel tableau

evening approaches,
shadows gray the hills and vales
with a wash of ink

the moth, pale white

the moth, pale white with
faded stains, tattered edges...
granny's worn hanky

roaming the mesa
collecting clay sherds and hope --
a vessel, a poem

the mind meanders

the mind meanders
like an ancient waterway
burnishing old stones

earth crumbling and cracked
tendrils branching toward the sun
fractals everywhere

cheerful profusion

amidst somber news
spring flings flagrant color in
cheerful profusion

fingers sifting sand

fingers sifting sand
feeling through grit, warm and moist --
sun-spangled treasures!

shimmering riffles
spouting diamond-bright crescents
dance free of the sea
trailing surface lace...
then slip that pearly delight
beneath normal sight

red mesas melting

red mesas melting
deep rocks tumbling, playing bass
to the thunderdrums

the mesa's eons

the mesa's eons
lined in gold, russet and rose --
geology's prose

Just a Moment -- a book of haiku

Soon after I moved to New Mexico, I began writing haiku as I meandered over mountain and desert.  Recently I collected them, paired them with photos, and made a book for my family.  Seeing Yo-Yo Ma share his music (#songsofcomfort) for the good of all during the pandemic, I decided to make a small contribution.  I'll post a couple of pages per day in the hopes a few will find them comforting.  Below are the cover and first page.
